Let’s talk about FOG baby, let’s talk about Fats and Grease (and Oils). Baked goods, homemade meals, and family are what the holidays are made of. Cooking ingredients such as meat fat, lard, dairy products, butter, etc. are all products that make up of FOG.
To avoid FOG clogs, remember not to put fats, oils, and grease down the sink. Pouring fats, oils, and grease down your drain can lead to backups and sewer spills within your home and in the community. The average diameter of your kitchen drain is only an inch and a half, making it simple to accidently clog it when washing dishes that contain FOG. Please keep in mind that the drain is not a dump during this holiday season. Instead, pour the FOG into a trash-safe container, allow it to cool, and then discard it!
When sewer pipes back up at a home, the homeowner is responsible for the clean-up. Avoid costly repairs by following these simple steps:
- Recycle it: Local facilities available that collect household FOG.
- Can it: Collect FOG in a disposable container, mix it with absorbent like paper towels, and throw it in the trash.
- Install sink drain screens: Drain screens collect food waste that should be tossed in the trash.
- Properly dispose of food waste: Dispose all food waste directly into the appropriate trash can.
Please assist us this holiday season by telling your family and friends that the drain is not a dump.
Happy Thanksgiving!
