David J. Shawver of Stanton to serve as Chairman and John Withers of Irvine to serve as Vice-Chairman for the Orange County Sanitation District
Fountain Valley, California – The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD; Sanitation District) announces that the City of Stanton Mayor David Shawver will serve as Chairman of the OCSD Board of Directors. This position was previously held by the City of Fullerton Mayor Pro Tem Greg Sebourn. John Withers, of the Irvine Ranch Water District Board of Directors, will serve as Vice-Chairman.
“I’m honored to take the position of Chairman for the Orange County Sanitation District and it is my hope to continue what my predecessors have started,” stated David Shawver. “The mission of the Sanitation District is to protect public health and the environment. This is more than just mere words, it is truly what guides this agency to be one of the best in the county, and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve its mission.”
Mr. Shawver has served on the OCSD Board for 18 years where he most recently served as the Board Vice-Chairman. Additionally, he participates on a variety of OCSD committees including the Legislative and Public Affairs Committee, Operations Committee, Administration Committee, and the Steering Committee.
Mr. Shawver attended the University of the Pacific (UOP) playing both football and baseball. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology with minors in Geology and Education where he was awarded an academic graduate fellowship teaching at UOP and received his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Education.
Mr. Shawver and his wife Jennifer have lived in Stanton for 46 years and have three sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren. He has taught for 42 years in the Long Beach Unified School District, at Long Beach City College, and Hope International University in Fullerton. In addition, he has coached football, wrestling, baseball, girls’ softball, girls’ cross country, and was the medical athletic trainer at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Vice-Chairman John Withers has been a member of OCSD’s Board of Directors since 2009 and previously served as the Chair of the Operations Committee. “I am truly honored to have been chosen to serve as the Board Vice-Chairman,” stated John Withers. “OCSD is not only committed to clean beaches and a healthy ocean, but treats wastewater as a valuable resource, and to be a member of this leadership that will continue to guide this agency well into the future is an honor.”
John Withers has been an Irvine resident since 1984 and has served on the Board of Directors of the Irvine Ranch Water District for 29 years. Additionally, he was on the Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission for 23 years and served as the Chairman of the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board.
