Upcoming Work
LOCATION: Airway Ave. between Baker St. and McCormick Ave.
- What: Pipeline rehabilitation by lining the pipe using the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) method
- When: Starting on Monday, March 11
- The first phase of lining between Baker St. and Paularino Ave. will take approximately 1 week, followed by the next phase of lining between Paularino Ave. and McCormick Ave.
- Work Hours: CIPP curing process will require 24/7 continuous work (March 13 – 15, March 20-22*).
- Impacts:
- Traffic control will be set up around previously excavated pits
- Increase in activity and noise levels
- Smells from the curing process are anticipated to be minimal
About Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP)
A pre-measured liner is delivered in a refrigerated truck and inserted through a tall tower approximately 15 – 20 ft high into the existing pipeline through the recently excavated access pits. After the liner has been inserted, it is filled with water heated to a certain temperature and cured for approximately 36 hours. When fully cured, the liner now acts as the new pipeline. Once the CIPP operation begins, it cannot be stopped until completed, thus requiring the 24/7 continuous work. Crews will be onsite for monitoring throughout the entire process.
Current Work
LOCATION: Airway Ave., east of McCormick Ave., and onto Airport Loop Dr.
- What: Excavation of access pits located several hundred feet apart. Lining the pipe using the CIPP method will follow after excavation has been completed.
- When: Ongoing and lasting approximately 2 months
- Work Hours: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday – Friday
- Impacts:
- Travel lanes reconfigured with reduced street parking.
- Increased noise due to construction activity.
- A lane of travel in each direction will remain.
- Please drive with caution with the new street striping layout.
*All dates and times are subject to change due to operational factors or inclement weather.
Project Description
This project will rehabilitate two parallel regional sewer pipelines, along a 1-mile stretch on Airway Avenue and Airport Loop Drive in the City of Costa Mesa, near the John Wayne Airport. The rehabilitation of the two pipelines must occur one at a time and will take place in separate phases.
